Strategy Guide
Beginner Tips
Canal Era Opening
The easiest opening is: build a cotton mill, connect it to any port, and sell it. This gets your income positive quickly and is the simplest path to understand.
Other openings are perfectly viable. It's possible to open with heavy development and large loans.
Rail Era Preparation
Try to have some coal on the board at the beginning of the Rail Era. Build a Level 2+ coal mine near the end of the Canal Era. All rail tracks require coal, so there will be high demand.
Supply and Demand
Build whatever is in short supply:
- Many unflipped cotton mills? Build ports to flip them.
- Many unflipped ports? Build cotton mills to use them.
- External coal market is low? Build coal mines - they'll empty and flip fast.
- External iron market is low? Build iron works.
Concentrating on what's in demand lets you flip industries faster, scoring income and VP sooner.
Income Management
- Loans are viable. At least one loan is generally necessary. Taking £30 is most efficient per action.
- Earlier loans are cheaper because lower income bands are smaller.
- Multiple loans over a game is a valid strategy.
- Getting income positive early (via cotton sales) is the safest beginner approach.
Link Strategy
Don't underestimate link VP! A link between two heavily-built locations can generate 5-7 VP on its own. In the Rail era, links are a major VP source.
- Build links where multiple industries will be flipped.
- Two rail links per action (£15 + 2 coal) is more efficient than building one at a time.
- Links also expand your personal network for future building.
Shipyards
Shipyards provide large VP (10 for L1, 18 for L2) and flip immediately when built. However:
- You must develop through Level 0 first (costs iron).
- Only available at Barrow-in-Furness and Birkenhead.
- Level 1 is Canal-only, Level 2 is Rail-only.
- Worth the investment if you can reach those locations efficiently.
Advanced Concepts
Turn Order Manipulation
Spending less money in a round means going first next round. Going first is valuable because you get first pick of actions. Consider timing big purchases.
Overbuilding
In the Rail era, you can overbuild your own Level 1 tiles that survived the transition. You can also overbuild opponents' coal/iron if the external market is empty - use this aggressively.
Card Management
- Location cards are most flexible for building at specific spots.
- Industry cards are great when you want to build in your existing network.
- Any card works for loans, development, links, and passing.
- Plan your hand around your 2 actions per turn.
Scoring Awareness
- Canal era: flipped tiles + canal link VP. Level 1 tiles get removed, so don't over-invest in them.
- Rail era: flipped tiles + rail link VP + money/10. Everything counts here.
- Higher-level tiles give more VP but cost more to build. Balance investment vs. timing.
